The American Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Leon Botstein, presents its second concert of the 2013–14 season. The program features Stroke, by the prominent American composer and Bard faculty member Joan Tower. Dedicated to her younger brother, who suffered a stroke in 2008, the piece is “concerned with many emotions, one that hopefully offers a quiet ‘hope’ at the end,” says Tower. “I tried to depict these extreme emotions through the music journey of my 17-minute piece.” Also on the program is Finnish composer Erkki Melartin’s lushly Romantic and haunting Violin Concerto, composed in 1913. Melartin was a younger colleague of Jean Sibelius, the towering figure in his country’s musical history. The performance features Conservatory Concerto Competition winner, Dongfang Ouyang '15, on violin.

The program concludes with Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 2 in C Major, perhaps the most personal and deeply felt of the composer’s four symphonies. The work looks back to Haydn and Schubert, but also forward, particularly in its poignant slow movement.

The concert will be preceded by a preconcert talk with Christopher H. Gibbs and a discussion with Joan Tower.

The final concert of the 2013–14 series takes place on Friday, April 11, and Saturday, April 12, featuring Johann Strauss’s Emperor Waltz, Accelerations, and The Blue Danube; Julius Conus’s Violin Concerto, with Zhi Ma ’15; and Johannes Brahms’s Symphony No. 2.
