Boscobel’s 2018 Exhibition Showcases Historic Collapsible Furniture

History surrounds you when you visit Boscobel House and Gardens. The elegantly restored, Neoclassical house in Garrison sits right by Constitution Marsh, overlooking West Point across the river. In honor of its mission celebrating Hudson Valley design, history, and nature, Boscobel holds an annual exhibition inside its mansion-turned-museum. This year’s installation, “Campaign Furniture: The March of Portable Design,” opened on August 25.

The exhibition features two dozen curated furnishings inspired by Boscobel’s renowned permanent collection of over 500 historic New York furniture pieces. Ranging from wooden game tables to mahogany armchairs, “Campaign Furniture” feels like an upscale antique show. But these pieces are more than pretty—the 18th and 19th century items were chosen for their packable functionality. These folding chairs, beds, tables, and other household staples were essential traveling gear for military officers, Hudson River School artists, and tourists during this time period.

One example is an English collapsible chair from the 1840s, on loan from Michael Pashby Antiques in New York. Made of mahogany, modern upholstery, and brass, the armchair folds neatly after the seat cushion is removed. Like this chair, the plush beauty of all the pieces on display embody the luxury of the era and the desire of well-heeled travelers to carry their comforts with them on the go.

“Campaign Furniture” runs through November 4. You can visit the exhibition Wednesday through Monday from 10am to 5pm. Admission is included with admission to the house and/or grounds. Adult prices start at $11 and children’s at $5. Get your tickets and learn more about membership admission at Boscobel’s website.
