Over the course of my 12 years (and counting) as Chronogram’s music editor, I’ve been blessed to interview dozens of interesting Hudson Valley musicians. Without doubt, one of the most interesting is Catskill’s resident mad genius, Brian Dewan, who I profiled for our December 2008 issue. And now Dewan is the subject of a new documentary, Analog Dreams: The Art of Brian Dewan, which will be shown this Friday at Time & Space Limited.

An eclectic renaissance man, Dewan is a singer and composer as well as an illustrator, sculptor, orator, film strip maker, painter, poet, furniture maker, and builder of synthesizers and other musical instruments. In addition to being a unique personality who makes his own music and art, he’s collaborated with Blue Man Group, David Byrne, They Might Be Giants, Neutral Milk Hotel, and others.

Here, Dewan performs one my favorite originals, “The Kids,” on his tricked-out electric zither:

Analog Dreams: The Art of Brian Dewan will screen on January 19 at 7pm at Time & Space Limited in Hudson, New York. The film will be followed with performance by Dewan and a Q&A with the film’s director Keif Roberts. Tickets are $7. For more information, call (518) 822-8100 or visit http://timeandspace.org/.
