Cider Week Returns to the Hudson Valley

It's not as big an industry as it was in days of yore, but cider making—hard cider, specifically—was a staple industry of the earliest European settlers in the Hudson Valley and many of the following generations. And thanks to Cider Week (October 18-27), an effort launched in 2011 by Glynwood, a nonprofit organization promoting sustainable local agriculture, America's oldest libation is making a crisp comeback. With events both Upstate and in New York, Cider Week 2013 presents dozens of special programs at participating bars and bistros that feature cider and dishes made with the sweet spirit. • Market Watch: At Long Last, Accord Gets a Grocery Store

The Rondout Valley corridor running between Marbletown and Wawarsing has long been a food desert, ironic for a region historically famed for its fertile soil and still dotted with farms. So the opening of Accord Market on the small hamlet’s Main Street earlier this month is understandably BIG NEWS for anyone who lives within a 10-mile radius. With a focus on sustainability and locally sourcing, this small market aims to stock an inventory replete with everything you need for your basic weekly shop, from bulk cleaning supplies to beer and fresh produce.
