Earth’s climate is changing. Our planet's surface temperature, atmospheric and ocean chemistry, precipitation and drought patterns, and sea level have all seen significant changes from only a century ago. While natural factors continue to play a role in the pace and direction of climate change, since the mid-20th century humans have taken increasing control of the climate. Henry Pollack is a Professor of Geophysics (emeritus) at the University of Michigan. The internationally renowned climate scientist comes to New Paltz with a timely discussion of our climate’s uncertain future, at a moment in planetary history when the scientific consensus about humanity’s role in contemporary climate change has been met with mixed responses from local and national governments, the private sector and the international community.
