Based on the true story of a devil-may-care Texas rodeo cowboy who, in 1985, becomes an accidental AIDS activist when diagnosed H.I.V. positive and given 30 days to live. Finding the U.S. medical establishment unresponsive and constrained by FDA rules and regs, Ron Woodruff (Matthew McConaughey) crosses the border into Mexico when he learns about some promising alternative treatments. He’s soon smuggling them back across the border circumventing the law and the medical community. An outsider to the gay community, Ron finds an unlikely ally in fellow AIDS patient Rayon (Jared Leto), a transsexual who shares Ron’s lust for life. To avoid government sanctions, they establish a “buyers club,” where H.I.V.-positive people pay monthly dues for access to drugs and treatments. Deep in the heart of Texas, they fight for their lives; for dignity and acceptance.
