Five Fall Festivities in the Hudson Valley

On the ticket in the coming weeks: modern dance, locally made artisan gifts, surreal puppetry, fine jazz, and one of the area’s longest-running food festivals.


Turkish Dance Duo in Troy

In the lobby of EMPAC in Troy on October 24 at 7:30pm, the Turkish experimental dance duo Taldans will deliver their intriguing work “Dolap.” The piece utilizes dancers Filiz Sizanli and Mustafa Kapla and, get this, a full-sized refrigerator, which the pair moves and manipulates through a series of seemingly impossible choreographed movements. Dance scholar and curator Noémie Solomon will facilitate a conversation with the artists following the performance. Refreshments will be served. Tickets are $20 ($15 students).


Dutchess Handmade Sale in Poughkeepsie


After opening with a reception on November 1 from 5-7pm, the Dutchess Handmade pop-up sale will run at Arts Mid Hudson’s Poughkeepsie location through December 21. The sale will feature locally made glass, jewelry, greeting cards, textiles, ceramics, wood products, prints, paintings, home-decorating items, and more from over 75 local artists and artisans. Private, late-night shopping is available upon request.


Quintron and Miss Pussycat in Kingston

If you’ve yet to catch the New Orleans-based music/puppetry duo of Quintron and Miss Pussycat, your chance to correct that woeful discrepancy falls on November 1, when the oddball act visits BSP Kingston for a 7:30pm performance. Featuring the enigmatic Quintron on organ and self-made electronic instruments and Missy Pussycat herself holding forth with her collection of quirky handcrafted puppet characters, the pair stages legendarily bizarre DIY productions at underground rock clubs and festivals around the world. The troupe Three Brained Robot and band Ereptile Dysfunction open. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door.


James Emery Trio in Newburgh

Orange County jazz guitarist James Emery is best known for his membership in the acclaimed String Trio of New York. On November 2 at 8pm, Emery brings his own chamber jazz trio to Atlas Studio in Newburgh for the final 2019 installment of the Jazz at Atlas series. Joining the leader in the James Emery Trio are saxophonist/flutist/clarinetist Rob DiBelis and bassist Kim Cass. Tickets are $25 at the door and $20 in advance.


Taste of the Hudson Valley Festival in Poughkeepsie

For over 25 years, the Taste of the Hudson Valley festival has been held on the banks of the majestic Hudson River in Poughkeepsie. Taking place at on November 3 from 12-4pm at event venue the Grandview, the festival pairs wines from the world’s top producers with the finest culinary delights from establishments and purveyors located in the Hudson Valley and beyond and benefits MidHudson Regional Hospital.
