Five Hudson Valley Online Events to Enjoy

Yes, it’s another week here in Lockdown Land. But besides wiping down doorknobs and countertops for the umpteenth time, there’s plenty to occupy your time with to be found on the internet—and much of it’s being generated by local Hudson Valley arts facilities that could really use your support during this trying time.


Byrdcliffe Guild Debuts Instagram Artist Series

In place of the long-running Wednesday summer cafe series for artists-in-residence, the Byrdcliffe Guild in Woodstock recently announced the launching of a weekly series of Instagram Live studio visits featuring selected artists. The series begins May 13 at 11am with an installment focusing on artist and Byrdcliffe board member Julia Santos Solomon and hosted by Byrdcliffe Exhibitions Director Karlyn Benson. Falcon Flies on with Streaming Concerts

As is the case with the many music venues in our region and across the country that have been struggling the stay solvent during the pandemic, the Falcon has begun offering live and archival streaming concerts via its website. Among the former was a recent in-house performance by Jacob and David Bernz, while the latter includes events taped at the Marlboro nightclub; on May 20 at 8pm, the Falcon’s website will present a 2007 performance by the recently departed jazz guitar great Vic Juris. The Falcon is among the venues allied with the National Independent Venue Association’s #SaveOurStages campaign to solicit support from congressional representatives for small independent music venues during the crisis.


Crandell Theatre Offers Online Movies Columbia County’s oldest and largest movie house, the Crandell Theatre (est. 1923), has joined the ranks of area independent cinemas now offering unique streaming films whose virtual ticket fees help sustain the facility. Available for watching this week via the indie-minded Chatham theater’s website are the documentaries Capital in the Twenty-First Century, The Hottest August, and Crescendo, as well as the surreal French romantic comedy On a Magical Night.


Wired Gallery Opens Teen Art Show with Virtual Reception

From May 16 through May 31, Wired Gallery in High Falls will present the “Ulster County Teen Show” featuring works by 28 young artists who are based in Ulster County and between the ages of 12 and 18. On May 31 from 5pm to 7pm, the gallery will host a virtual reception using Zoom to provide the public with an opportunity to meet and chat with the artists and take a live guided tour of the show as hung at the gallery. (To request a Zoom invitation to the reception, please email Among the 28 selected artists, nine were unable to access their work and deliver them to the gallery due to school and studio closures. Those six artists’ works are on view at the Wired Gallery’s website.


Bearsville Theater Opens Concert Cave

Another area music venue that’s bringing sheltering-in-place audiences by dipping back into its live archives is the iconic Bearsville Theater. On Saturdays at 8pm, the recently revived entertainment complex is now digitally staging Bearsville Uncut, a series that delves into the venue’s vast vault of audio recordings of the many legendary local acts who’ve graced its hallowed bandstand over its 30-plus years. May 16’s “Bearsville Uncut #006” episode features hometown hero Happy Traum for a night of pure folk genius.
