Gertrude Bell in Hayyil

The historic Moreno Stage at Boughton Place will present a one-woman play about Gertrude Bell who traveled in her own caravans throughout Arabia and Mesopotamia and, during WWI, served with the Cairo Office of British intelligence. She worked in the British Government in Baghdad and lived there until her death. This staged reading, written and performed by Anne Wandres, is based upon eleven days in 1914 when Bell felt “imprisoned” by the ruling family in the city of Hayyil. The script follows Bell’s day-by-day description of her stay in Hayyil. Background slides accompany the performance.
