History of Corrections in Wallkill and Shawagunk

Retired Superintendent David Miller and current Superintendent Joseph Smith will compare and contrast the histories and missions of Wallkill and Shawangunk Correctional Facilities. Wallkill Prison was built in the 1930's in response to the need for a medium security facility for younger inmates with a good prospect for rehabilitation. On the other hand, Shawangunk Correctional Facility was built in the 1980's as a place to contain and control maximum security inmates who had demonstrated the need for close supervision. The program will include a discussion of notorious inmates, unique programs, and noteworthy events. Special attention will focus on prior escapes, homicides and natural disasters. Time will be provided at the end for questions and answers.
