Thank levain, the long reign of Wonder Bread is over, and people are recognizing the unmatched flavor complexity and added nutritional benefits of sourdough. Though lots of people tried their hand at sourdough bread baking during lockdown, many will be content to outsource this work to the pros, long-term. Wondering where to get a delicious, fresh loaf of sourdough in the Hudson Valley region? We’ve got you covered with these bakeries offering fresh boules, baguettes, and batards, pastries, cakes, coffee, and breakfast menus that will make your mouth water. Get your sourdough fix at one of these cozy shops––and maybe a mimosa or breakfast sammie, too.

Kingston Bread + Bar | Kingston

Kingston Bread + Bar started as a one-man show out of Aaron Quint’s kitchen in 2017. Quint grew his cult following selling loaves out of Rough Draft on weekends, and in 2019 partnered with the bar/bookstore’s owners to open an all-day bakery, restaurant, and bar on North Front Street. Located in the former home of Greek eatery Kovo, KB+B offers artisanal bread and pastries and a full food menu, plus wine and beer from local craft producers. The bread is made with organic whole wheat flour from Farmer Ground, Sparrowbush Farm, Champlain Valley Milling, and Main grains. Try their Roasted Sweet Potato Boule with slow roasted sweet potatoes, fermented garlic and fresh dill in Levain Sourdough bread for $10, and the Challah––a naturally leavened sourdough version of the Jewish bakery classic, with hand-braided loaves for sale on Saturdays for $5-$9. In addition to their classic loaves, they offer an extensive breakfast menu including their bestselling KB+B egg sandwich with a fried egg, roasted tomato, herb mayo, and cheddar on a sesame lik-bread bun for $7. 

Breadfolks | Hudson

Breadfolks on Warren Street in Hudson is an organic, naturally fermented bakery that specializes in breads, pastries, baked goods, and coffee. The shop was started by portrait photographer to the rich and famous Norman Jean Roy, who left the industry and learned everything about baking in a year before launching the bakery. The shop offers baguettes, fougasse, Danish rugbrod, ciabatta, focaccia, rugala, turnovers, croissants, turnovers, and their country loaf––a traditional sourdough made with whole wheat and rye. Breadfolks, which one Yelp reviewer calls a “gift to the Hudson,” has rapidly earned a cult following, so get there early for your pick.

Kelly's Bakery | Poughkeepsie

Kelly’s Bakery in Poughkeepsie––named after owner Kevin Halim’s dog––has all the country sourdough loaves and baguettes, croissants, scones, and specialty breads one could hope for. Pop into their cafe for a locally roasted coffee, tea, and other specialty drinks like the Kelly’s Cortado––which is 4 oz of equal part espresso and steamed milk, and bayleaf. The shop offers different delicious sections each day of the week––they have olive and onion bread on Wednesdays and Saturdays, Thursdays are sunflower millets, Fridays are chocolate and coffee-infused fig sourdough, Sundays are potato cheddar, and the weekend brings specialty piccks like ciabatta, babka, and cookies.

Beacon Bread Company | Beacon

The Beacon Bread Company, located on Main Street in the heart of the town, is a bakery and restaurant offering an array of fresh breads, pastries, and small-batch specialities upon request. Some daily options include baguettes, harvest grain loaves, sticky buns, croissants, vegan brownies, and sourdough loaves and boules. They also serve breakfast all day, with menu items like the Ultimate Bagel Sandwich, with house-cured lox, arugula, capers, cream cheese, tomato, red onion, and fresh dill on a toasted bagel for $16.95. And for those warmer days coming soon, have a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice (or a mimosa), a draft beer, or a glass of rosé in their outdoor dining area.

Bread Alone | multiple locations

Long before sourdough was the nationwide gold standard, Bread Alone was making organic, artisanal loaves. The family-owned, sustainable bakery has been supplying area supermarkets, restaurants, and residents with fresh-baked, long-fermentation sourdough loaves and pastries since 1983. They have cafe locations with full food menus as well as loaves for sale in Boiceville, Kingston, Rhinebeck, and Woodstock. Try their fruit and nut sourdough––and sourdough porridge bread with walnuts, currants, golden raisins, and apricots. They also have whole wheat, peasant, San Francisco, French, and Rye sourdoughs. And don’t forget about the pastries, like the traditional and chocolate croissant, cheese strudel Danish, pecan sticky bun, vegan chocolate spelt pound cake, and an apple raspberry crumb pie.

Bartlett House/The Maker | Ghent/Hudson

In 2016, the team behind luxury hotel The Maker in Hudson transformed the historic c.1870 railroad hotel on Route 66 in Ghent into the Bartlett House, a kitchen, cafe, and bakery. Their artisanal bread selection shines with a range of choices that includes baguettes, country sourdough, and bialis, plus tasty pastries like muffins, babka, doughnuts, and cakes. Try the apricot walnut sourdough for $8.75 or the miller’s rye for $7.95. If you you’re feeling brunchy, opt for the breakfast quesadilla with fried eggs, peppers, onions, avocado, refried beans, cheese, house-made flour tortilla served with salsa verde and sour cream for $12.50. The kitchen also has a selection of vegan soups, salads, and burgers. There are also teas, cider, and a full coffee bar with beans from San Francisco roastery Sightglass.


Newburgh Flour Shop | Newburgh

Newburgh Flour Shop, founded in 2018, specializes in baked goods and custom cakes,as well as artisanal loaves. Enjoy a rye, multigrain, or sourdough batard ($7.50-$9) or a boule at this family-owned bakery located in the heart of the city, on the historic Liberty Street Corridor. Come summer, you can pick up poppyseed rolls or housemade burger buns for grilling. And for your next special occasion, customize a perfect cake with a range of fillings, frostings, and design options to choose from. Some of their featured products include a winter citrus tart for $4.50 and a coffee mint macaron for $3.

Le Perche / Swoon Kitchenbar | Hudson

Younger sister to Hudson's hugely popular New American eatery Swoon Kitchenbar, Le Perche is a restaurant and wood-burning bakery, dishing up French classics and seasonal, farm-to-table fare. The selection of artisanal breads and pastries, all baked in the wood-fired oven, include baguettes (of course), country sourdoughs, oat pullman loaves, plus buttery croissants and pains-au-chocolat, sticky buns, cookies, tarts, and scones. You can pick up a loaf either at Le Perche or at Swoon.

See & Be Kitchen | Cairo

In a little 400-square-foot timber-frame building husband-and-wife duo Ben Salif Traore and Chrissy Michaels are turning out tasty treats for Cairo residents as well as area businesses. The name of the business is a wordplay on the owners' initials (C&B). Michaels, who also designed the food menu at nearby resort Glen Falls House, runs the kitchen, while Traore bakes, turning out wood-fired sourdough loaves and croissants for the hungry public. Artisanal bread selections include an olive bread, spelt boule, super seeded bread, baguettes, and Italian bread ($4.50-$12). On the hot foot side, Michaels works her magic on daily sandwich specials, turning out wonders like the fried squash blossom on super seeded bread with mozzarella, pesto, and chanterelles; or the liverwurst sandwich with watermelon pickles, olives, and a sunny egg. Breakfast sandwiches, on bread of your choice, are also available daily. In the pastry section, look forward are cinnamon buns and croissant favorites like almond, hazelnut chocolate, and plain ($3-$4.50), plus a selection of savory choices like the veggie croissant ($5). The shop also acts as a provisions market, with a selection of meat, pantry staples, and—in summer months—local produce.

Pawling Bread Co.

Pawling Bread Company began in Cynthia Kinahan’s basement. After five years, Kinahan has a humming storefront on Main Street that is a hub for the local community. Check out their signature Country Loaf, a sourdough bread made with a blend of whole grain wheat and rye ($8), or their White Loaf sourdough, made with unbleached, non-bromated bread flour ($7). They also offer Monkey Bread and Bread Cheese––a gluten-free "bread" made with pasteurized cow's milk baked into cheese––sold in 12-oz pieces ($15). The shop serves drinks like the matcha lattes, Kopi––a Malaysian-style coffee with espresso, water, and condensed milk––cold brews, Nitro coffee, and tea. And in their pantry, purchase staples like locally made honey and maple syrup, rolled oats, fresh yeast, cultured butter, semi-sweet chocolate chips, and ImmuneSchein Ginger Elixirs.


Hawthorne Valley

Hawthorne Valley Farm’s certified organic bakery, located in their Ghent farm store, turns out fresh breads and baked goods daily, using biodynamic or organically grown grains, nuts, seeds, fruits, and flour milled daily. Check out their Sourdough Rye, Black Forrest Rye bread, and Whole Grain Sourdough Spelt bread. They offer other specialty products like challah, cinnamon raisin, and bagel bread. Also try their Sunflower Flax Sourdough Breads, Baguettes, and Rolls––which are made with mostly whole-wheat flour. Their selection of pastries, including buttermilk biscuits, muffins, scones, and croissants, are made with milk and buttermilk from the farm’s grass-fed biodynamic dairy.. In their creamery, you can find plain and maple vanilla yogurt, raw milk hard cheese like Raclette and Alpine, soft cheeses such as the Fern Hill and Luna, raw milk, whey, ricotta, buttermilk, and packaged cheese curds.
