With good bones, a rockin' rail trail, and a Borscht belt-era legacy in its back pocket, the quaint town of Hurleyville in Sullivan County was always poised to make a comeback. Over the past few years, the Hurleyville Project, a coalition of area businesses, nonprofits, and residents, has worked hard to achieve the goal of revitalizing Hurleyville by establishing a thriving arts, retail, and food scene.
Along with Gallery 222 and Fiber-On-Main, one of the successful initiatives is the Hurleyville Arts Centre (HAC), a state-of-the art theater and performance space right on Main Street. HAC has a dynamic and fun summer season of film, music, and dance coming up. Currently playing through July 1 is Pixar's box office-smashing animated film The Incredibles 2.
The old rail station and freight house of the New York Ontario & Western (O&W) railroad line in Hurleyville NY will serve as the site for the colorful performance about humanity’s shifts and movement, migration, adaptation and overcoming obstacles and walls. Each traveller, dressed in a different color scheme represents a unique place of origin and tradition, and together the ensemble presents a spectacular visual and aural montage of human stories of a group of people who are on the move. Following the performance, audience members are invited to enjoy interactive workshops in puppetry and stilt walking taught by the performers and the puppeteer!
Returning to the HAC on August 11 is SUPERSTORIES featuring 20-time MOTH champion Adam Wade, Ophira Eisenberg of NPRs Ask Me Another & more, and MOTH host, Fringe Festival performer, podcaster, and comic Peter Aguero! Saying this will be a good show may be the understatement of the year. Make sure to reserve your tickets in advance or risk missing out on a quality evening.
That's not all. The new summer Yoga and Dance schedule, with more classes including Body Bar and Adult Ballet to get fit and stay active. And, nearly every weekend at the HAC has a new movie including first-run Hollywood blockbusters, socially conscious documentaries, independant releases, student films, and more all season long in the brand new, state of the art HAC cinema.
