Rhinebeck’s Omega Institute for Holistic Studies places great emphasis on sustainability. The Omega Center for Sustainable Living, one of the first two buildings in the world to be certified as “living” by the International Living Building Institute, is powered by a 48.5kW solar electric system with a water reclamation facility. The “conference on sustainable design for a new earth,” to be held on October 19 to 21, brings together leaders in the field to review current environmental, economic, and social systems and explore new creative solutions for responding to them. Speakers include cofounder of the Biomimicry Institute Janine Benyus, author of the definitive book on green jobs Van Jones, president of the Foundation on Economic Trends Jeremy Rifkin, and African spiritualist Sobonfu Somé, an initiated member of the Dagara tribe of Burkina Faso.
