Im a food editor on holiday with my wife & guests. When a friend suggested we dine at the 88 Charles St. Caf, what started as a tour of delectable cuisine turned out to be less than hash house-quality grub. The onion soup a bowl of gloppy, lukewarm broth flavored with freeze-dried onions & layered with burnt, gooey cheese so cement-like, I needed a pneumatic drill to get through it. We then steeled ourselves for what was to come: Calamari Fra Diavolo Elastic squid lumped into a burning hot tomato sauce obviously canned. Seafood platter Tiny tough mussels accompanied by 1 beards & clams, shrimp, scallops & calamari over slushy, cold pasta in that same canned sauce. Oh yes. The frozen, rubbery clams and scallops smelled as though theyd been left out of the fridge for a week. Chicken in Champagne Cream Sauce No champagne here. More like acidy white wine, with half & half [no cream here] & bottled tiny mushroom pieces. Finally, Shell Steak with more bottled mushrooms The steak was so tough I didnt know whether to eat it, or ride it! I feel sorry for the owner, Mr. Balacich, deceiving himself as to the brilliance of his cooking ability over all these years.
