Jazz fans have much to look forward to this weekend. On Saturday, there’s Terri Lyne Carrington/Jack DeJohnette show at the Woodstock Community Center (see this past Tuesday’s Daily Dose) and on Sunday at Gomen Kudasi Noodle Shop there’ll be a performance by multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee and bassist Michael Bisio.

McPhee, who was profiled in the May 2007 issue of Chronogram, is arguably the most important and influential free jazz saxophonist to emerge in the wake of first-generation 1960s trailblazers John Coltrane, Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders, and Albert Ayler. Bisio has well led his own groups but is perhaps best known for his work with pianists Matthew Shipp and David Arner. Although McPhee and Bisio have occasionally worked together within various projects since 1995, their duo performances are rare, making this one a must.

No footage of McPhee and Bisio performing as duo seems to exist, so here are some clips of each of them performing solo:

Joe McPhee and Michael Bisio will perform at Gomen Kudasi Noodle Shop in New Paltz on March 20 at 5:30pm. Admission is $10 ($7 students) and reservations are recommended. For more information, call (845) 255-8811 or visit http://gomenkudasainy.com/.
