Kairos: A Consort of Singers Performs in West Park

Kairos: a Consort of Singers
  • Kairos: a Consort of Singers
Formed in 1994, the vocal ensemble Kairos: A Consort of Singers is based at Holy Cross Monastery, where the group is currently ensconced as the church’s artists-in-residence. This Sunday, under the direction of Dr. Edward Lundergan, Kairos will present a program of “Lessons & Hymns” at the Monastery.

A hidden treasure of the Hudson Valley musical landscape, the divinely voiced Kairos performs unaccompanied (acapella) music via a repertoire that spans from the medieval era to today. Presented on Palm Sunday, “Lessons & Hymns” comes at the end of Lent and ushers in the very earliest days of spring. The service is based on the Anglican tradition of “Lessons & Carols” for Christmas, with readings from the Old and New Testaments interspersed liberally with congregational hymns and choral performances. Serene and contemplative, the service is remarkably inclusive: People of all faiths and of none are welcome and find solace as the hard days of winter draw to a close. The service has roots in the ancient Tenebrae services traditionally held before Easter, on the last three days of Holy Week. The program will include music from Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Spain, from the 15th century to the 20th. The composers represented include Heinrich Isaac, Francis Poulenc, Heinrich Schütz, Henry Purcell, and Tomás Luis de Victoria.

Hear the ensemble perform Psalm 96, “Chantez a Dieu, chanson nouvelle (Sing to the Lord a New Song)” by 16th-century Dutch composer Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck:

Kairos: A Consort of Singers will present “Lessons & Hymns” on March 25 at 3pm at the Holy Cross Monastery in West Park, New York. The concert is free. All are welcome, regardless of religious affiliation (or lack thereof). It is suggested that audience members arrive at the venue at least 20 minutes before the performance to secure seating.
