Mass MoCA will get dance crazy for the new year when Afro-funk greats Kaleta and Super Yamba Band bust a move at the contemporary arts and performance center’s Club B10 on January 7.
Fronted by the great Afrobeat and juju singer and guitarist Leon Ligan-Majek AKA Kaleta, the Brooklyn-based Super Yamba Band are one of New York’s leading live draws. Kaleta emigrated from the Afrobeat birthplace of Lagos, Nigeria, and began playing in the 1970s and went on to tour and record with Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Lauryn Hill, and many others.
The group’s 2017 debut album, Medaho (which translates as “big brother,” “elder,” or “teacher”), was included on one of Bandcamp’s “Best Albums of Summer” lists, and two of its tracks were selected to be featured in the ABC/Hulu series “High Fidelity” starring Zoe Kravitz.
