Mommyheads Make Music in Beacon on Friday

The Mommyheads
  • The Mommyheads
The Mommyheads were one of those band handles that cracked me up back in the late ’80s, when I first heard it—it was a word I’d actually call my younger sisters when we were all in our single digits and making fun of each other, but I’d forgotten about by the time I was in my 20s. And, to be honest, I’d forgotten about the Mommyheads, too, until they reformed several years ago and began releasing new albums. Which is also what brings them the Towne Crier on September 21.

Formed by singer Adam Elk in New York in 1987, when he and the other core members were still in high school, the Mommyheads made a mini-splash on the Lower East Side before relocating to San Francisco for the full flowering of their unique brand of experimental art pop. The group’s fourth album, 1995’s Bingham’s Hole, commonly cited as their masterpiece weaves together Frank Zappa, XTC, the Grateful Dead, Television, the Beatles, and other uncommon pairings. And, somehow, it all works.

The Mommyheads will perform with Jenn Clapp and Todd Giudice at the Towne Crier in Beacon, New York, on September 21 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $15. For more information, call (845) 855-1300 or visit
