Music Festival is Back with a Bang at Mass MoCA

The contemporary classical music organization Bang on a Can was founded by composers David Lang, Julia Wolfe, and Michael Gordon in New York in 1987 and has risen to become one of the world’s unquestioned leaders when it comes to presenting new music. Since 2008, Bang on a Can has made its summer home at North Adams’s modern art incubator, Mass MoCA, where the group holds its yearly Summer Institute of Music festival and residency program for young composers. The annual event will once again beat the drum in Western Mass, starting next week.

Devoted “entirely to adventurous contemporary music,” the event allows aspiring composers to
will spend three musically immersive weeks, during which their own new works will be performed. Players will perform in ensembles sitting alongside their teachers, and the festival includes daily performances in the museum galleries, free with museum admission, and will culminate with a six-hour blow-out marathon concert performed by the festival ensembles and special guests. Also included are African and Latin music workshops, electronics and music business seminars, free events in the community, and more.
