American cultural diversity through song, asking how we conceive of a national identity as a nation with a deeply varied cultural landscape. The recital traces the influence of the American ideal on the works of composers and poets throughout this country’s history. Sopranos Laura Soto-Bayomi and Helen Huang, mezzo-soprano Katherine Maysek, baritone Jeremy Hirsch, and pianist Hyanghyun Lee will perform music ranging from songs by émigré composers such as Kurt Weill through traditional texts set non-traditionally by Charles Ives, to the music of such diverse contemporary composers as John Musto and Bright Sheng.
