Newburgh Gets the Blues with Slam Allen

[imgae-1] Hudson Valley guitarist and vocalist Slam Allen has certainly, as the line goes, paid his dues to play the blues. And this Friday the soulful titan will bring those blues to the lobby of Newburgh’s historic Ritz Theater as part of local nonprofit redevelopment project Safe Harbors of the Hudson’s Blues on Broadway series.

After learning his licks as young man with his family’s soul band, the Allen Brothers, he became lead guitarist and bandleader for the legendary Chicago harmonica king James Cotton. After his tenure with Cotton had come to a close, he began leading his own bands and has performed around the world as a headliner. The Blues on Broadway series began in March with an appearance by area blues daddy Big Joe Fitz and, following Friday’s show by Allen, continues with performances by Willa Vincitore (May 18), Murali Coryell (June 22), Bruce Katz (July 20), and Jeremy Baum (August 17).

Dig Allen and band last year at the New York State Blues Fest:

Slam Allen will perform in the Safe Harbors Lobby of the Ritz Theater in Newburgh, New York, on April 27 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $15. For more information, visit http://www.safe-harbors.org//

The leaves are turning brilliant hues of orange and red. The kids (and the kids at heart) are contemplating their costumes. And all of us are trying to figure out if we need a sweater under that light jacket. It can only mean one thing: Mid-October is upon us. Here’s some stuff to do.
