Tim Berne | Atlas Studios | Newburgh

September 14. Originally hailing from north of our region, Syracuse, to be exact, Tim Berne has been a vital force of the creative jazz scene in New York since he moved there to study with the late Julius Hemphill in the mid-1970s. Snakeoil, which here sneaks in for newish venue Atlas Studios' "Jazz at Atlas" series, is a band the alto saxophonist and composer founded circa 2010 that also includes clarinetist Oscar Noriega, pianist Matt Mitchell, and drummer Ches Smith (regular guitarist Ryan Ferreira won't be on hand for this date). Berne's compositions are lengthy, labyrinthine, and elliptical—a real workout for the brain. But, at the same time, they leave plenty of space for the players to assert themselves. 8pm. $20. Newburgh. (845) 391-8855; Atlasnewburgh.com.
