"Nivola: Sandscapes"

When: May 8-Jan. 10, 2022
Features a selection of 50 works of sandcast sculpting by Costantino Nivola (1911 - 1988), including sandcast reliefs, carved concrete sculptures, and rarely seen maquettes of his most important architectural commissions, examining the artistic process, range of influences, and notable impact that Nivola had on modern urban architecture and design. BCostantino Nivola began his career as a graphic designer in Milan. Forced to flee fascist Italy in 1939, Nivola and his wife Ruth Guggenheim settled in the hamlet of Springs, New York, where the couple became a fixture in the lively artistic community. During this period, Nivola developed and refined his sandcasting technique, experimenting in his studio and within the surrounding environment on the east end of Long Island. Nivola's method involved carving into wet sand and filling the negative form with plaster. He continued to evolve his technique over time, creating work that merged his overlapping interest in sculpture, painting, Sardinian iconography and the human figure.
