Lynd Ward is credited with setting the framework for the modern-day graphic novel with his 1929 “wordless novel” Gods' Man, a collection of 139 black-and-white woodcuts detailing the story of a painter struggling to create art amid the pressures of commerce and a society on the brink of financial collapse. Lynd published a handful of woodcut-engraved novels in the 1930s, as well as lending his illustrating talents to over 200 books, including six children’s books that were honored with Newberry medals.

“LitGraphic: The World of the Graphic Novel,” a comprehensive exhibition showcasing Lynd’s work as well as a host of others, including R. Crumb, Frank Miller, and Will Eisner, is on display through May 26 at the Norman Rockwell Museum, 9 Glendale Road, Stockbridge, Massachusetts. (413) 298-4100; www.nrm.org.
The museum will be hosting other events associated with “LitGraphic” throughout the month of May.

Comic Arts Festival
A whole day of workshops, lectures, book signings, and conversations with noted comic artists. Saturday, May 3 from 10am to 5pm.

Arts Come Alive
A workshop with noted artists Andy Fish and Veronica Hebard, teaching how to create a comic book. Saturday, May 17 from 1:30 to 4pm.

Film Screening
Special screening of "Will Eisner: Portrait of a Sequential Artist" followed by a discussion with filmmakers Andrew D. Cooke and Jon B. Cooke. Saturday, May 17 at 2pm.

Art Talk
Barron Storey, illustrator, graphic novelist, and noted educator, has created award-winning artwork for the cover and pages of Time, National Geographic, and more discusses his work. Satuday, May 24 starting at 5:30pm.

All programs are free with museum admission
