12:10 a.m. 7/3/2009

Dad, it dangled you
over the black lake and shook you so
you dreamed of guns and Mother.

Made you look it in the face,
the whole brood forced to watch you squirm
or choose not to.

The light in your eyes
flickered back and forth
fear. hope. fear.
I’d never seen you afraid before.

What a fugue
is cancer.
