Poem: Volcano

we’d made it through
all right she said don’t
you think
the kids are happy
Loren likes college thank
goodness
she never liked anything else
and Colton seems
to be fine and we
we
are making it
don’t you think

he sat on a Mexican beach
with a margarita
his
fifth
yes he said it’s all so
wonderful
but in his mind
he walked a narrow path
with palm trees and a gorge
dropping down

and a volcano just to
the right
an ominous cloud
and the porters unsure the
sky red and
a groan from beneath
as though the gods were mad
once
again
