In the past decade, Jim and Gina Sullivan of the James J. Sullivan Corporation have been a major force in the revitalization of Poughkeepsie. Their renovation of the c.1915 architectural icon the Kings Court Hotel, with its storied past, created 40 Cannon Street, which debuted in 2019 as a multiuse space with apartments, a brewery, a wine bar, and an art gallery.

Next door, the couple turned a c.1845 Gilded Age church into nightclub and event venue Revel 32, which has hosted parties, galas, tapas pop-ups, and concerts since coming online in 2020. Now in their next master stroke, the Sullivans, in collaboration with catering partner and CIA grad chef David Burke and 40 Cannon Street tennant 1915 Wine Cellar, will give Poughkeepsie its first wine festival. The first annual Queen City International Wine Festival will take place over two days on February 17 and 18.

“When we purchased the building, we did so with the intent to program events for, and

create partnerships with, the community and the City of Poughkeepsie because we love

the Hudson Valley,” says Jim Sullivan. “We have been successful in bringing extraordinary events to Poughkeepsie that guests would otherwise have to travel to New York City for.”

Things will kick off Friday evening, February 17, with a dinner prepared by Chef Burke and wine pairings, followed by live music and dancing. The main event, dubbed the Grand Concourse, will take place Saturday afternoon, February 18, with over 100 vendors spread across three of Revel 32’s grand rooms. Each space is themed with one room dedicated to Hudson Valley producers and one each for Old World (Europe) and New World (Americas, Africa, Australia) producers. Splurge on a VIP ticket for access to the Room of Bubbles, with a selection of sparkling wines from around the globe. James Beard-winning wine educator Kevin Zraly will also be leading a seminar. The grand concourse will have two time slots: 1-4pm and 5-8pm, offering guests maximum flexibility.

“It had always been a dream of ours to open a wine bar,” said Russell Beck, who co-owns 1915 Wine Cellar with his wife Elke and son Kai. “We were told that we wouldn’t be successful in Poughkeepsie, but we knew that wine lovers speak a universal language and we have defied the odds. Now we’re ready to present this fantastic international wine event and expect a huge response from wine lovers who want to beat the winter blues and don’t want to wait a year for a fall festival.”

The Queen City International Wine Festival is a 21+ event. Tickets begin at $75 and are on sale now.
