Rachel Elfenbein to discuss her book Engendering Revolution: Women, Unpaid Labor, and Maternalism in Bolivarian Venezuela

Engendering Revolution: Women, Unpaid Labor, and Maternalism in Bolivarian Venezuela examines Venezuela’s decision to become the first country in the world to constitutionally recognize the value of housework and enshrine homemakers’ social security. Grounded in field research in Venezuela during Hugo Chávez’s presidency, Engendering Revolution documents opportunities and challenges to upend gender inequality in revolutionary times. Rachel Elfenbein, who majored in Hispanic Studies at Vassar, holds a PhD in Sociology and was a Fulbright scholar to Venezuela. She works with civil society organizations in North America and southern Africa on housing, public health, children’s, immigrants’, women’s, and workers' rights issues.
