Requinte Trio Featuring Janis Siegel Comes to Kingston

Kudos to local musicians Teri Roiger and John Menegon for helping to keep jazz alive in Kingston via their Jazzstock series at the Senate Garage. The impeccably curated concerts have brought some of the music’s top names to the historic structure in the Stockade, which has excellent acoustics and an inviting vibe. This month, Jazzstock presents yet another enticing evening, this one with the Requinte Trio featuring vocalist Janice Siegal of the Manhattan Transfer.

From the 1970s to the early 1980s, the Manhattan Transfer were the hottest thing swingin’. Inspired by earlier jazz vocal groups such as Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross and the Andrews Sisters, the quartet took the revived style into the mainstream and won several Grammys along the way; one went to Siegel herself for the group’s 1980 arrangement of Weather Report’s “Birdland.” But her cohorts in the Requinte Trio—drummer and singer Nanny Assis, pianist John DiMartino, and bassist Leo Traversa—are no slouches, either, all storied musical veterans themselves. The band plays a breezy, pleasing cocktail of American and Brazilian jazz with vocals in both Portuguese and English.
