Seems like a good time to check in on the upcoming Woodstock Festival 50th anniversary events being planned at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, the site of the 1969 festival, which shouldn’t be confused with—though it probably will be—original ’69 festival promoter Michael Lang’s upcoming rival anniversary event at Watkins Glen.

Recently I announced here that Santana would be performing at August’s Woodstock Golden Anniversary Week at Bethel Woods, and that the site would be adding acts. And now they have. The Doobie Brothers will open for Santana on August 17; on August 16, Ringo Starr and His All Star Band will perform with guests Arlo Guthrie and Edgar Winter. (Of course, Ringo didn’t play at the 1969 fest and the Doobie Brothers didn’t form until the year after it happened, although Arlo did perform, and so did Edgar, as a sideman to his late brother Johnny Winter.) The remaining bit of big news has yet to be revealed: Which acts will perform on August 18, the closing night? So far Bethel Woods has kept mum on that, so watch this space. On August 15, though, the director’s cut of the concert film Woodstock will be screened right there on the actual field, making for a meta experience bar none.

Let’s tease the happening a bit more with this clip featuring Arlo Guthrie’s performance of “Coming into Los Angeles” from the film:

The Woodstock Golden Anniversary Week festival will take place August 15-18 at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel, New York. Get more information or buy tickets.

  • A Little Touch of Stardust: Where to Celebrate 50 Years of Woodstock in the Hudson Valley

Here in the Hudson Valley and Catskills there’s a coziness about the Woodstock '69 50th anniversary. While tie dye and tolerance have never really gone out of style around here, those who’d like to mark the anniversary in some way have a number of local goings-on to slake their thirst for nostalgia, peace, love and music. Hey now, we still know how to brew that stuff from scratch.
