This historical epic, based on a true story from the powerful  18th and 19th century African Kingdom of Dahomey, sets the scene, but Academy-Award winner Viola Davis, with all the grit, compassion and tenacity we've witnessed in her previous roles, delivers the compelling story on her able, muscular shoulders. Writer/director Gina Prince-Bythewood said recently that Hollywood was wary of backing a film about African women warriors. That soon changed when they realized they had a hit on their hands. Prince-Bythewood is at the top of her game, just like her star. Rated PG-13.
