Besides his merely being the leader of the long-running psychedelic rock band the Flaming Lips, singer-songwriter Wayne Coyne is a visual artist whose abstract lysergic creations and personally devised stage-performance effects match the feel of his group’s music. This Saturday, the rocker will make an incredibly rare Hudson Valley solo appearance titled “The Art of Wayne Coyne and the History of the Flaming Lips” to benefit local transcendental church the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors.

Established in New York by artists Alex and Allyson Grey in 1985 to house Alex’s series of Sacred Mirrors, the chapel relocated to its present permanent site in Wappinger in 2008. According to its website, the mission of the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, or CoSM, “is to build an enduring sanctuary of visionary art to inspire every pilgrim’s creative path and embody the values of love and perennial wisdom.” Founded in Oklahoma in 1983, the Flaming Lips have blazed a trail that’s taken them from their beginnings as van-touring, dirt-eating D.I.Y. punks to the current status as world-famous, stadium-filling superstars.

Here are the Lips in 1994, performing a personal fave from their early days:

And here’s a 2009 video of Alex Grey with a tour of the CoSM site:

“The Art of Wayne Coyne and the History of the Flaming Lips” will take place at the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors in Wappinger, New York, on May 12 at 7pm. Coyne will talk about his work as a solo artist and with the Flaming Lips; a Q&A with Coyne and Alex and Allyson Grey will follow. Tickets are $150 general public and $250 VIP.
