Newburgh, NY is a city that celebrates; a multicultural community that revels in its diversity, honors its past, and supports its future through the growth of local businesses. You might have heard about the Newburgh revival—but the city’s change is less of a sudden revitalization and more of a continued revolution, supported by steadfast residents determined to see their hometown flourish.

With a vibrant waterfront nightlife, hip dining spots, and fashion-forward boutiques, there are countless ways to enjoy yourself in this historic city. But in case you're not sure where to start or what to do in Newburgh, here is our weekend guide.

Friday

Cut out from work early to arrive around lunchtime and head to Hudson Taco for gourmet Mexican street food in an industrial-chic setting with panoramic river views. Tacos range from $2.50-$3.50, with flavors like spicy chorizo, cola pork carnitas, and more. After a round of desserts (hola, churros), check into your accommodations.

Newburgh offers few options beyond chain hotels, but many downtown homes have been renovated and are available through Airbnb. The Heights House is a revitalized Victorian with stunning views of the river, and Washington’s Guestquarters, located on Liberty Street, is walking distance to shops and cafes. Or, take a short drive across the river to stay at one of Beacon’s many swanky accommodations and boutique hotels, like the Inn and Spa at Beacon.

Before dinner, visit nearby bookstore-bar the Barking Goose to browse their selections of books and beers—both impressive. Enjoy a regional craft beer, cider, or wine from one of their 40 taps, but save room for dinner. Lauded Chef Michael Kelly worked at some of New York’s finest restaurants before opening Liberty Street Bistro in downtown Newburgh. With a rotating French-inspired New American menu, you’ll enjoy creative dishes like roasted duck with anise, parsnips, and tamarind jus, or steamed mussels made with red curry and coconut milk.

Saturday

Start your morning on South Street at Blacc Vanilla, a hip-yet-casual cafe known for its artful lattes and friendly staff. Then peruse the shops along Liberty Street, including women’s fashion at Cream, quality handmade gifts at Field Trip, and stylish housewares and goods at Oliver & Chatfield.

Browse nearby Ann Street Gallery’s revolving contemporary art exhibits or visit Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site, where General George Washington made key decisions that later shaped the country.

No stay in Newburgh is complete without a waterfront stroll and lunch—try seafood at Blu Pointe or barbecue at Billy Joe’s Ribworks. After a breather back at your room, get ready for an early dinner with a side of joie de vivre at Mama Roux. This New Orleans-inspired eatery on Broadway features quality Cajun comfort food like gumbo, rabbit and biscuits, fried oyster po’boys, and more. Then make your way to Newburgh Brewing Co. where live music starts every Saturday at 8:30pm; enjoy a fresh pint while playing a round of indoor cornhole.

It might be hard to resist returning to Blacc Vanilla the next morning, but the brunch at Ms. Fairfax is worth trying. The cafe is known for its specialty crepes, but diners can choose from traditional favorites like a breakfast burrito, sandwiches, or endless egg dishes.

Before leaving town pop into Motorcyclepedia, a 85,000-square-foot motorcycle museum featuring more than 600 bikes dating back to 1897, plus two Wall of Death exhibits with live demonstrations. You’ll be road-trip ready after this thrilling end to an exciting weekend.
