Winter Concert Series Kicks Off in Tannersville

Too often, those of us in the Hudson Valley low country, closer to the river, tend to take the abundance of live music we’re surrounded with for granted. Farther up in the mountains, however, it’s a different scene, with far fewer options. There just aren’t as many regular music venues in in the higher elevations, and sometimes the folks who live there just don’t feel like getting in the car and driving 30 to 40 minutes to go catch some live music. And forget about it in the winter, when temps are tough and the roads down from those beautiful peaks can be downright death-defying. Thankfully for the hill dwellers in Greene County, though, there’s the yearly, free 23Arts in the Snow concert series, which kicks off in at Mountain Top Library in Tannersville this Friday.

Beginning on January 11 and running through March 22, the winter concerts are each led by a different top young jazz or classical artist. This year’s series starts with the world premiere of “Strauss & #HerStory,” a concert of the vocal music of composer Richard Strauss as seen through the lens of feminine experience via his wife Pauline, who served as his life-long mentor, muse, and confidant. Performing will be the New York Times¬-lauded soprano Celine Mogielnicki and pianist Renana Gutman.

In this video, Mogielnicki sings Debussy’s immortal “Claire de Lune” accompanied by pianist Martha May:

Here’s the full series schedule: “Strauss & #HerStory” with Celine Mogielnicki and Renana Gutman (January 11); “Folk Element” led by Adam Moezinia (February 1); “Brownie Speaks” led by Dominick Farinacci (February 15); “Ancestral Stride” led by Mathis Picard (March 8); and “World of Wonder” led by Christie Dashiell (March 22). All concerts are free and take place at 7pm at Mountain Top Library in Tannersville, New York. For more information, call (518) 589-5707 or visit www.23artsorg.
