“Opening a gift shop has been a dream of mine since my children were young,” says Lynn Varuzzo, owner of Daffodils Gift Shoppe in Poughkeepsie’s Eastdale Village. In 2018, while driving through Pleasant Valley, she spotted the storefront that would become the first iteration of Daffodils and felt a nudge from the universe. “My mother had recently passed away, and I knew that her hand was guiding me,” Varuzzo says. “Daffodils and its name are a tribute to her.”
After three years in Pleasant Valley, Varuzzo moved Daffodils Gift Shoppe to its current home in the uber-walkable new shopping and dining complex at Eastdale Village. “We continued to grow in Pleasant Valley through the Covid Pandemic, so I felt confident planning our growth into Eastdale Village. I knew that we were onto something,” she says. “We were bringing something to the area that we didn’t already have."
That Daffodils je ne sais quoi is a wide-ranging yet refined mix of high-quality gifts for the people and celebrations that deserve a little extra thought. From high-end jewelry, leather goods, and accessories to baby clothes, books, and home goods, there’s a little of something for everyone tucked inside Daffodils' curated displays.
Looking for something for Mother’s Day? Varuzzo carries much-loved pieces from family-owned boutique companies whose products stand the test of time. A beautiful and functional leather handbag from Brighton or one of Enewton’s 18-karat gold-filled bracelets, earrings, and necklaces that are swim- and shower-ready are sure to wow. (And with Father’s Day just around the corner, a leather wallet or belt from Brighton might be a wise grab, too.)
Daffodils has also become known as a must-stop for clothes and gifts for the little ones, with high-quality offerings from Elegant Baby and Mayoral. “There are no baby shops in Poughkeepsie anymore,” says Varuzzo. “I initially brought in baby items to fulfill the need and it’s become a hit.”
For gifts that span the ages, Varuzzo also carries super-soft plush objects from Jellycat, which range from toddler-approved floppy bunnies to smiling potted orchids and strawberries that are popular for brightening up dorm rooms and desks. There’s also gift basket inspiration galore, with fun offerings such as the cocktail starters from My Drink Bomb and Oprah’s favorite bubble bath, Lollia by Margot Elena.
“Daffodils is also a place you can shop for yourself as much as someone else,” Varuzzo says. “People stop in for a wedding, retirement, or birthday, and end up coming back again and again. They start out as customers and become our friends.”To stay up to date with in-store events, discounts, and the latest product drops, follow Daffodils Gift Shoppe on Instagram.
