Dr. Silvia Birklein, Ph.D., founder and clinical director of SYNC Psychological Services

Mental and emotional health are especially important in these turbulent times; however, it can be difficult to discern the right therapy for you, as well as ensuring you have the best therapist to evaluate and treat issues. SYNC Psychological Services—with offices in Kingston, Syracuse, New York City, and Connecticut—is here to help.

“We’re a diverse therapy group, committed to excellence,” says Silvia Birklein, Ph.D., founder and clinical director of SYNC. “We strive to work ethically and morally sound, and are committed to racial, sexual, gender, and economic justice.”

SYNC clinicians aim to help their clients navigate issues ranging from anxiety to depression, relationships, trauma, addiction, stress, cultural transitions, emigration, and somatics. The New York State-licensed clinical psychologists, psychoanalysts, social workers, mental health counselors, creative arts therapists, and clinical trainees are trained in a variety of modalities. Birklein’s team comes from diverse backgrounds with experience in Latinx, transgender, BIPOC, LGTBQIA+, and other social/political issues. Therapies are available in English, Polish, Spanish, German, or French. The practice’s wide selection of therapies are creatively tailored to the needs of each patient—including individual, couple, family, and group psychotherapy; psychodynamic psychotherapy; Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral (DBT) Therapies, Emotion Focused Couple Therapy (EFT), Psychoanalysis, Object Relations Motivational Interviewing, and Sex Therapy approaches.

SYNC Somatics™ employs integrative and embodied psychotherapy, somatic experiencing, authentic movement, dance/movement therapy, recognizing and working with stored emotions that express in the body’s movement. Other body approaches include vagal nerve therapy, yoga, mindfulness, and meditation.

If you’re unsure what type of therapy would work for you, SYNC offers a 15-minute pre-consultation to see what would be a good match. New patients can click the Patient Info Form button on SYNC’s website to get started; a clinical coordinator will respond within 24 hours and connect them with the patient portal to access an intake package, with forms to be completed. The practice works with select insurance companies (Aetna, NYSHIP) and out–of-network programs, as well as a sliding scale for self-payment. Individual sessions are typically held once or twice weekly for 45 minutes, either in-person or via telehealth. Patients can request appointments conveniently via the website.

Treatment at SYNC is a collaborative relationship between patients and clinicians, according to Birklein. “The quality of our services matters to us,” she says. “Our clinicians are extremely well-trained professionals who are experienced in a variety of approaches and theories; they work creatively and with compassion to help patients pursue a happier life.”
