Renowned Rhinebeck author Lesa Cline-Ransome has been honored with both a Coretta Scott King Author Honor and a Newbery Honor for her verse novel, One Big Open Sky, announced at last week’s American Library Association’s Youth Media Awards. Released in 2024, the novel offers an intimate portrayal of three Black women embarking on a perilous westward journey during the post-Reconstruction era, shedding light on the often-overlooked history of Black homesteaders. The New York Times lauded the middle-grade novel as โ€œa mix of richly textured description and vibrant dialogue.โ€

Cline-Ransome’s literary journey began with her debut biography, Satchel Paige, which garnered critical acclaim as an ALA Notable Book and a Bank Street College โ€œBest Childrenโ€™s Book of the Year.โ€ Over the years, she has authored more than 20 books for young readers, including the award-winning Finding Langston trilogy. Her works have received numerous accolades, such as NAACP Image Award nominations, the Scott Oโ€™Dell Award for Historical Fiction, and a Christopher Award. Reflecting on her writing process, Cline-Ransome emphasizes the importance of character-driven narratives: โ€œI always begin with the character.
