Brian Dewan

Over the course of my 12 years (and counting) as Chronogramโ€™s music editor, Iโ€™ve been blessed to interview dozens of interesting Hudson Valley musicians. Without doubt, one of the most interesting is Catskillโ€™s resident mad genius, Brian Dewan, who I profiled for our December 2008 issue. And now Dewan is the subject of a new documentary, Analog Dreams: The Art of Brian Dewan, which will be shown this Friday at Time & Space Limited.

An eclectic renaissance man, Dewan is a singer and composer as well as an illustrator, sculptor, orator, film strip maker, painter, poet, furniture maker, and builder of synthesizers and other musical instruments. In addition to being a unique personality who makes his own music and art, heโ€™s collaborated with Blue Man Group, David Byrne, They Might Be Giants, Neutral Milk Hotel, and others.

Here, Dewan performs one my favorite originals, โ€œThe Kids,โ€ on his tricked-out electric zither:

Analog Dreams: The Art of Brian Dewan will screen on January 19 at 7pm at Time & Space Limited in Hudson, New York. The film will be followed with performance by Dewan and a Q&A with the filmโ€™s director Keif Roberts. Tickets are $7. For more information, call (518) 822-8100 or visit http://timeandspace.org/.
