Legendary local bassist Gary Peacock, who made his jazz bones in the 1960s by working with Paul Bley, Jimmy Giuffre, Albert Ayler, Roland Kirk, and, briefly, Miles Davis, among others, has two new releases out on ECM Records.
One of them is Somewhere, a sublime 2009 live set by the long-running standards trio of Peacock, pianist Keith Jarrett, and Woodstock drummer Jack DeJohnette. Here’s a version of the Bernstein/Sondheim classic “Tonight” from the album:

The other disc is Azure, a brilliant duo session by Peacock and another Woodstock jazzer, pianist Marilyn Crispell. While the trio recording is expectedly brilliant, given the players, what a pair Peacock and Crispell make on the other release. Their interplay across the hour-long program is seamless, constantly looping and morphing in on itself like a Mobius strip to reemerge with ever-surprising interplay.
