Linda Mary Montano’s “Making Chakra Sound Medicine” in Kingston
Linda Mary Montano
Hudson Valley native Linda Mary Montano is a pioneering legend of radical contemporary performance art, known for marathon works like 7 Years of Living Art (1984-1991) and Another 7 Years of Living Art (1991-1998), whose titles allude to their epic durations. On August 30, Montano will visit Curious magazine and gift shop for a measurably shorter presentation: “Making Chakra Sound Medicine,” a 75-minute collaborative workshop that centers on her guiding philosophy of blending art with daily life via artistic ritual.

Montano was born in Saugerties in 1942 and has been creating provocative work since the mid-1960s. Her first major performance was 1972’s Chicken Woman. The piece was based “The Chicken Show,” her 1969 MFA sculpture exhibition at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where she exhibited nine live chickens in cages on the roof of the campus art building. Described as “starkly autobiographical and often concerned with personal and spiritual discipline,” Montano’s recent work often reflects her focus on the healing aspects of yoga, Zen, Catholicism, and other belief systems. The subtitle of her “Making Chakra Sound Medicine” art-counseling workshop is “Come here and laugh! Cry! Jump!!”

Linda Mary Montano will present her “Making Chakra Sound Medicine” workshop at Curious in Kingston on August 30 at 2pm. There is a suggested donation of $10 (or barter or trade). To register, email hello@curiouskingston.com. (On September 6, Curious will celebrate its first anniversary with an appearance by musician and author Adam Snyder and others.)
