Though the Hudson Valley may not have New York City’s reputation as the American capital of bagels, upstate bagel shops still deliver on this boiled and baked breakfast staple. If you’re craving a bagel, the Hudson Valley offers options ranging from classic plain with schmear to stuffed with eggplant parm. And these spots go beyond, too, turning bagels into the foundation for egg sandwiches, lunch delicacies, and even bagel burgers. They also offer other breakfast fare like omelets, pancakes, and French toast galore. And many of these bakeries are stocked with pastries like black and white cookies, pies, and scones. Stop in these spots one morning and see why they’re Hudson Valley favorites.

Hopewell Hot Bagel | Hopewell Junction

In operation since 1986 and now available to order online, Hopewell Hot Bagels offers a wide range of breakfast classics. In addition to nearly 20 bagel varieties made fresh daily, ranging from whole wheat poppy to jalapeno to weekend special Asiago cheese, there are also blueberry or chocolate chip pancakes, or challah bread French toast. Savory options include omelets with plenty of fixings, from peppers to pastrami. If you’re not a breakfast person, Hopewell Hot Bagel still has you covered. Try a sandwich stuffed with your choice of egg, tuna, or chicken salad. Go for the classic side of fries, or a potato knish. For something sweet, there’s cinnamon rolls, black and white cookies, and a variety of fruit-filled scones. Or grab a dozen doughnuts to take home.

Moonrise Bagels | Woodstock

Moonrise Bagel founders Jeremy Rhodes and Ali Chetkof have backgrounds in accounting and PR, respectively. But at this new Woodstock spot, they perfect the art of the stuffed bagel. This idea came to be after Rhodes combined breakfast and dinner by putting pizza inside a bagel. After much experimenting, Rhodes and Chetkof opened Moonrise in December 2021 in Chetkof’s hometown of Woodstock. Customers can choose from indulgent fillings like egg-and-cheese, eggplant parm, buffalo chicken, Philly cheesesteak, and the one that started it all—the pizza bagel, filled with tomato sauce and fresh mozzarella cheese. If you’re looking for a more classic breakfast, there’s also unstuffed varieties like sesame and everything bagels that you can order to go. Moonrise also offers coffee from Heavyfeather Roasting Co.

Broad Street Bagels | Kinderhook

Broad Street Bagels crafts bagels made from a 150-year-old recipe passed down to owner Meghan Calcagno. Order your authentic Brooklyn-style, kettle-boiled bagel with bacon, egg, and cheese, or try the cream cheese that the Calcagno family whips themselves. For lunch, there’s bagel burgers, served with a side of grilled potatoes. Broad Street Bagel has plenty of other goodies to offer, from chocolate covered biscotti to hot stuffed peppers. Broad Street Bagel uses coffee from Capital City Roasters in their espresso program, which offers everything from cappuccinos to mochas and Americanos. The original wood flooring, brick walls, and white marble countertops create a vintage atmosphere to match the authentic old world bagels. On the other side of the river? Broad Street bagels are also available in all their glory at Goodie’s in Catskill, where they are delivered fresh daily and turned into elaborate sandwich creations.

The Bagel Shoppe | Fishkill and Beacon

The Bagel Shoppe has been a Fishkill favorite since 1998. In 2020, a second location was opened in Beacon. Stop in to try fun bagel flavors like carrot walnut raisin or cinnamon stick. Take your bagel with a homemade spread in flavors like olive and pimento or walnut raisin. Each breakfast sandwich and omelet is made with farm-fresh eggs. Try the house specialty sandwich “bagel all the way,” with smoked salmon, cream cheese, onion, and tomato. There are also plenty of sweets to choose from, like cannolis, eclairs, and Napoleons. Pies abound in classic flavors like pecan, apple, coconut custard, and cherry. Feeling wild? Try your coffee with interesting flavors like banana, peppermint, or Amaretto.

Rhinebeck Bagels | Rhinebeck

With pop art on its walls and chrome countertops, Rhinebeck Bagels offers a funky, retro aesthetic and laid-back atmosphere. Try a sweet cream cheese like the honey almond, or go savory with the bacon cheddar horseradish flavor. Or stack your bagel with toppings like avocado, jalapeno, and bacon. There’s also omelet sandwiches, a bagel sliced and filled with eggs, meat, and veggies. Most sandwiches can be made with a bagel instead of regular bread, so you can opt for a bagel BLT or tuna melt. For cold days, get cozy with a cup of soup, available Monday through Friday. Choose from beer-battered fries, tater tots, or classic hashbrowns to get your potato fix.

Sunrise Bagels | Kingston

Kingston favorite Sunrise Bagels offers big, fluffy bagels in all the classic flavors. There’s a wide array of spreads to choose from, in flavors like pesto sun-dried tomato, cinnamon apple, or olive. Try an omelet on a bagel in varieties like tomato and feta or ham and cheese. Deli sandwiches can be ordered on a bagel, like the mozzarella sandwich with olive oil, balsamic, garlic spread, and fresh basil. The fridge is stocked with favorite breakfast drinks like orange juice and chocolate milk. Sunrise is cash-only, so make a pit stop at the ATM next to the door before making your way to the counter.

Bodacious Bagels | Stone Ridge

Located on the ground floor of a sunny, yellow Dutch Colonial on Stone Ridge’s Main Street, Bodacious Bagels serves up authentic Middle Eastern eats alongside bagels. Bagels come in flavors like blueberry, cinnamon apple, and caraway salt stick. Or go for a flagel, available in sesame, poppy, and everything varieties. Falafel is also on offer, with the falafel sandwich or platter. Hummus, tahini, tabouli, and falafel are also available to order by the pound. For a pastry, grab some rugelach in flavors like apricot, raspberry, or raisin walnut. There are also plenty of cookies to choose from, like sugar and ginger snaps. Have some fresh squeezed orange juice with your breakfast, or warm up with a chai tea latte, coffee, or hot chocolate.

Lox of Bagels | Saugerties

After moving from New Jersey to Saugerties, John and Barb Farcher noticed there were no bagel spots nearby. They opened Lox of Bagels in 1990, and Saugerties residents have loved it ever since. Open 364 days of the year, (excluding Christmas), Lox of Bagels is a reliable Hudson Valley staple. Lox offers essential breakfast favorites all day long. Try a bagel with Nova Scotia lox, cream cheese, tomato, and onion. Lunch picks include burgers and wraps, served with fries or onion rings. Businesses all over the Hudson Valley sell Lox’s fresh-baked, from-scratch bagels, so you can stop in to Adams Fairacre Farms or Hannaford for your weekend fix if you aren’t in Saugerties.

Eastdale Ave Bagels | Poughkeepsie

There’s a variety of breakfast sandwiches, like the jalapeno popper, with jalapeno cream cheese, bacon, and onion. There’s also a wide variety of classic baked goods like croissants, crumb cakes, and muffins. Take your coffee hot or iced, or go for tea or hot chocolate. There’s also lunch options, with favorites like turkey clubs or BLTs with roasted chicken.

BnB Bagels | Kingston

BnB Bagels in Kingston offers bagels baked fresh every morning. Unlike Sunrise, BnB is for those who prefer their bagels a little thinner and crunchier. Pick from a variety of cream cheese flavors like scallion, green olive, or lox spread. Breakfast wraps are also available, stuffed with breakfast standards like bacon, eggs, sausage, and cheese. All sandwiches are available on bagels, hard rolls, or subs. Have a sandwich stacked with deli choices like chicken, tuna, or egg salad, or roast beef, ham, and turkey.
