Be it a sports injury, carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoarthritis, or a broken bone, the team of orthopedists at the Columbia Memorial Health Bone & Joint Center are driven by a shared mission: to help their patients enjoy life pain-free.

With two locations in Catskill and Hudson, CMH’s providers are able to oversee their patients’ treatment in convenient locations close to home. The team specializes in the treatment of joint pain, as well as shoulder, hand, foot, and ankle injuries, and they are the only orthopedic surgeons in the region who perform hip and knee replacements using a state-of-the-art robotic surgical system that is far more precise than conventional surgery.

“We’re the best kept secret in orthopedics in the region,” says Dr. Catherine Shin, a CMH orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hand and upper extremity conditions, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, and hand arthritis. “The care that we provide is the same or better than any orthopedic specialist you will see in New York City or Boston, but at CMH you’ll actually see your surgeon throughout treatment.”

“The access to care at CMH is part of what sets us apart,” adds Dr. Gregory Pace, a CMH orthopedic surgeon specializing in the treatment of issues related to the foot and ankle. “We are able to get our patients seen very quickly, often on the same day.”

Another important factor of the team’s success has been their holistic approach to treatment. “We’re very focused on orthopedic health, and that includes the health of the whole person,” says Dr. Louis DiGiovanni, an orthopedic surgeon who has been with CMH since 1985, who specializes in bone conservation techniques for hip replacement surgery and total knee arthroplasty surgery, fracture repair, ligament reconstruction, and arthroscopic surgery. “We work closely with our patients and coordinate with their other physicians to proactively address correctable risk factors that could result in poor surgical outcomes,” he says.

The team is committed to ensuring that patients in the Mid-Hudson Valley have the same access to cutting-edge technologies as those in larger metropolitan areas. In 2017, CMH invested in the Mako Robotic Arm, a cutting-edge technological unit that helps orthopedic surgeons plan and perform partial and total knee replacements and total hip replacements with exceptional accuracy. The increased precision of the robotic arm results in easier recovery and rehabilitation, and a more stable, long-lasting joint prosthesis that allows patients to get back to enjoying their lives to the fullest.

“We were one of the first teams in the region to use robotics for joint replacement surgeries,” says Dr. Chris Gorczynski, a CMH orthopedic surgeon specializing in total joint replacements and complex revisions, in addition to sports medicine and fracture care for children and adults. “We knew early on that this was a superior way of doing joint replacements that provided more consistency and better outcomes for our patients. We’re just as enthusiastically supportive of this service today as we were when we began offering it six years ago.”
