My friend and I took a yoga class at The Yoga House on Crown Street in Kingston last Wednesday. My friend hadn't been to a yoga class in over ten years, so she was a little nervous. There were about 10 of us in the Anusara class, and Jacqui our yoga instructor made everyone at ease. According to The Yoga House website, Anusara is "a nurturing system of yoga" that "combines modalities of Hatha yoga, pranayama, biomechanical principles of alignment, meditation, matras, and tantric philosophy." During the first 15 minutes, Jacqui took us through a few bending poses that were easy for me. The poses became increasingly challenging, and both my friend and I opted for child's pose when everyone suddenly sprouted into headstands.
The Yoga House has a homey ambiance because it is in a house. While sweating through my poses, I marveled at how people can turn ordinary houses into beautiful yoga studios. They make it look easy. It's $13 for a drop-in class which is very budget-friendly. A Chair Yoga class is offered once a week, which is perfect for seniors or those suffering from arthritis or inflexibility. The Yoga House also has monthly art exhibit openings that are open to the public.
