Since 2003, Garner Arts Center has made a name for itself as one of the Hudson Valley’s preeminent venues for experiential contemporary art. Located within the Garner Historic District in West Haverstraw, the 14-acre 19th Century textile factory complex is home to ambitious public art exhibitions and installations, film screenings, live performances, over 60 artist studios, and Industrial Arts Brewing.
This month, after a two-year hiatus, the center is relaunching one of its most beloved performance series, Contemporary Classical.
The series, which pairs masterful 21st Century new music performances with adventurous video art for an ephemeral, enveloping concert experience, kicks off on Saturday, March 26 with a concert by the J. Pavone String Ensemble featuring music from their newly released album, “… Of Late” on Astral Spirits records.
Led by New York-based composer and performer Jessica Pavone on viola, with Aimée Niemann on violin and Abby Swidler playing both violin and viola, the critically acclaimed contemporary classical chamber ensemble has been covered by The New Yorker, NYC Jazz Record, NPR, and Jazzwise, and their second album, “Lost and Found,” was named one of the “Best Contemporary Albums of 2020” by Bandcamp Daily.
During the performance, multimedia artist John Gasper will be creating live, improvisational video projections to pair with the ensemble’s calming, emotionally rich compositions. Gasper’s work, which draws on the natural world, incorporates modular synthesizers and vintage video mixers steeped in psychedelic feedback.
With ample room for distancing in the gorgeous, 8,000-square-foot Dye Works event space, on top of Garner Arts Center’s health and safety protocols, the one-of-a-kind concert is sure to bring the region’s music and art lovers a soulful return to a robust season of the center’s one-of-a-kind performances.
Make it a full night out by starting with a delicious dinner at on-site restaurant, Hudson’s Mill Tavern (reservations recommended), or arrive early to sample some award-winning craft beer from Industrial Arts Brewing in their new taproom within the Garner Historic District.
