Lionel Messi hoists the World Cup trophy as Argentina celebrates its victory over France in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Final in Qatar. Argentina enters the 2026 tournament as the defending champion.

The FIFA World Cup is one of the few sporting events capable of stopping the world. For a month, office productivity mysteriously declines, strangers become instant allies, and bars fill with fans draped in flags they’ve spent four years waiting to wave.

The 2026 tournament kicks off June 11, and the Hudson Valley is ready. Breweries, bars, bookstores, and public gathering spaces throughout the region are hosting watch parties from opening day through the July 19 final.

Few local venues have embraced soccer culture quite like Newburgh Brewing Company. The brewery hosted its first World Cup watch parties in 2014 and has steadily evolved into one of the region’s unofficial homes for the beautiful game. Wappingers Falls native and US Men’s National Team captain Tyler Adams has longstanding ties to the brewery, while American soccer legend Landon Donovan recently stopped by for a memoir launch event.

Newburgh Brewing is also an official supporter location for AFC Bournemouth, Adams’s Premier League club. The connection attracted enough attention that the Premier League sent a film crew to document one of the brewery’s watch parties and share it with millions of followers worldwide.

“It’s open to everyone, a lot of fun, very family friendly, and a very safe and inviting space,” says co-owner Paul Halayko. “I think we take a lot of pride in that.”

Fans pack Newburgh Brewing Company during a previous World Cup watch party. The brewery has become one of the Hudson Valley’s premier soccer-viewing destinations, drawing supporters from across the region for international matches.

That communal spirit is part of what makes the World Cup different. In a region as culturally diverse as the Hudson Valley, the tournament becomes an excuse for neighbors to gather, cheer, argue, celebrate, and occasionally suffer together.

“Watch the World Cup with us,” Halayko says. “Lots of energy, lots of excitement, people cheering on their teams, families coming together, friends coming together, and having a great time.”
