Through its ongoing free
film series, UPAC aka the Ulster Performing Arts Center has been offering a delightful
family entertainment option to the Kingston-area community. This week, for the
holiday season the historic theater is offering two classics for all-ages
viewing: The Wizard of Oz (December 19) and Dr. Suessโs How the
Grinch Stole Christmas (December 21).
Arguably the most beloved
film of all time, 1939โs The Wizard of Oz, based on L. Frank Baumโs 1900
novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, stars a fresh-faced Judy Garland in
the lead role of Dorothy. In the story, Dorothy does her best to evade the menacing
Wicked Witch of the West, befriending the whimsical Cowardly Lion, Tin Man, and
Scarecrow while navigating the magical Yellow Brick Road.
Directed by Ron Howard
and based on the 1957 childrenโs book of the same name, Dr. Suessโs How the
Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) has Jim Carey in the titular role of the grumpy
character who sets out to ruin Christmas in Whovilleโonly to end up saving it
in the end.
UPAC in Kingston will
present free screenings of The Wizard of Oz on December 19 at 7:30pm and
Dr. Suessโs How the Grinch Stole Christmas on December 21 at 7pm. For
