The indie film star will discuss her new collection of essays about birdwatching.
Actor Lili Taylor is a three-time Primetime Emmy Award nominee. She’s also a devoted birdwatcher and is now an author: Combining the latter two activities, Taylor recently published her first book, Turning to Birds, which she’ll celebrate with an event at the Crandell Theatre on July 14.
Taylor initially gained notoriety via supporting roles in Mystic Pizza (1988) and Say Anything… (1989). By the 1990s she was a leading indie film figure thanks to her starring roles in Dogfight (1991) and, perhaps most famously, as Valerie Solanas in I Shot Andy Warhol (1996). Nominated for four Independent Spirit Awards, Taylor won Best Supporting Female for her performance in Household Saints (1993).
It was while taking a break from acting that Taylor took a serious interest in birding, finding solace in the largely unobserved lives of the feathered, flying creatures. A National Audubon Society board member since 2016, she sees herself as an “ambassador” and activist for birds, penning the collection of essays that make up Turning to Birds to chronicle the intimate encounters with the animals that have captured her heart and imagination.
On July 14 at 7pm, Lili Taylor and theater executive director Mirissa Neff will discuss the stories and process behind Turning to Birds at the Crandell Theatre in Chatham. Attendees can purchase the book when they buy their tickets, and book orders will be fulfilled on the night of the event, courtesy of the Chatham Bookstore. Tickets are $35 adults with book; $15 adults without book; $32 members with book; and $12 members without book.
