Note to the United States Postal Service: Thanks for the great stamps of Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, et al, but when the time comes—and we certainly hope it won’t be anytime soon—you need to do one of Jonathan Richman. The Boston area-bred singer-songwriter, who here performs at the Rosendale Theatre, is legendary as one of America’s most idiosyncratic and influential artists. Since his years fronting proto-punk greats the Modern Lovers (“Roadrunner,” “Pablo Picasso”) in the early ’70s, Richman has worked in a more subdued, acoustic-based mode and continues to make audiences swoon with his confessional tunes and unironically earnest persona.
