The Hudson Valley’s creative undercurrent has long lived in basements, shared workspaces, home kitchens, tattoo parlors, galleries, and makeshift stages. With Next Wave, we turn our attention to Gen Z and young Millennial artists shaping that energy right now, working within DIY systems and tight margins to turn creativity into survival, identity, and infrastructure. In this feature, seven artists trace those realities from different angles: photographer Ryan Kraus, nail artist Sophia Schwartz, musicians Emma Montenegro and Sael Varela, multidisciplinary performer Gentle Mothh, and tattoo artists Mary Minahan (Miss Vampira) and Joanna Gacek. Across disciplines, their work asks how to sustain a creative life, build community, and how art holds personal and political meaning.
