The gloriously renovated Community Theater in Catskill has been rolling right along since our September 2025 article about its grand reopening. This month, the historic cinema will launch a new monthly series dubbed Punk Rock Movie Club, which starts on February 7 with a showing of the 1981 documentary The Decline of Western Civilization.

Curated by Catskill resident Jenny Toomey, a veteran of the indie bands Tsunami, Grenadine, Choke, and Licorice and the cofounder of the Simple Machines record label, Punk Rock Movie Clubโ€”or PRMC (geddit?)โ€”will run on first Sundays and feature a variety of films from the world of punk, indie, and DIY culture.

Directed by Penelope Spheeris, The Decline of Western Civilization is the first film of a so-named trilogy on Los Angeles rock music and chronicles the gritty LA punk scene circa 1979-1980. With blunt interviews of punk musicians and street-level participants, as well as fantastic early footage of key bands the Germs, Black Flag, X, the Circle Jerks, Fear, the Alice Bag Band, and Catholic Discipline, itโ€™s an essential, era-defining document.

Punk Rock Music Club will present The Decline of Western Civilization at the Community Theater in Catskill on February 7 at 2pm. Tickets are $11 ($8 for seniors, teachers, military, and kids 12 and under).
