The gloriously renovated Community Theater in Catskill has been rolling right along since our September 2025 article about its grand reopening. This month, the historic cinema will launch a new monthly series dubbed Punk Rock Movie Club, which starts on February 7 with a showing of the 1981 documentary The Decline of Western Civilization.
Curated by Catskill resident Jenny Toomey, a veteran of the indie bands Tsunami, Grenadine, Choke, and Licorice and the cofounder of the Simple Machines record label, Punk Rock Movie Clubโor PRMC (geddit?)โwill run on first Sundays and feature a variety of films from the world of punk, indie, and DIY culture.
Directed by Penelope Spheeris, The Decline of Western Civilization is the first film of a so-named trilogy on Los Angeles rock music and chronicles the gritty LA punk scene circa 1979-1980. With blunt interviews of punk musicians and street-level participants, as well as fantastic early footage of key bands the Germs, Black Flag, X, the Circle Jerks, Fear, the Alice Bag Band, and Catholic Discipline, itโs an essential, era-defining document.
Punk Rock Music Club will present The Decline of Western Civilization at the Community Theater in Catskill on February 7 at 2pm. Tickets are $11 ($8 for seniors, teachers, military, and kids 12 and under).
